Replacing Fluids

Your motorcycle’s fluids are the lifeblood of your machine, and it’s important to check and replace them regularly. The fluid you’ll need to replace most often is your engine oil. While it will range depending on the quality of your oil, for semi-synthetic or fully-synthetic blends you’ll need to get an oil change every 6,000 to 7,000 miles.

While you won’t need to replace your motorcycle’s other fluids as often as your oil, it’s still important to top them off regularly, and replace them once they begin to look dark, thick, or dirty. This includes your transmission fluid, brake fluid, fork oil, clutch fluid, and coolant or antifreeze. If you go a long period of time without riding your motorcycle you may also need to check your fuel to see if it’s gone stale. However, this can be avoided by placing a stabilizer in the tank before putting the bike away.

Belts, Chains, & Shafts

Chains, shafts, and belts are all important components that allow your motorcycle to rocket forward at breakneck speeds. When one of these pieces acts up you don't just lose velocity, you may not be able to move at all. To avoid this, it’s important to regularly lube these parts, and double-check that they aren’t becoming loose or corroded. While lubrication should help you avoid these problems, one of your belts or chains may need to be tightened eventually, and it’s often best to let a professional handle the job.
