Most motorcycle riders share a common fear: getting in a dangerous crash. Unfortunately, you can be an extremely safe rider and still end in a crash due to a distracted driver. Because of the many hazards on the road, it’s important to take proactive steps to stay safe and prevent a crash. Keep reading to learn what crash prevention steps you can take while on your motorcycle.

Increase Your Own Visibility

Sometimes the problem lies with your own ability to see ahead clearly. You’ll want to make the path ahead of you as easy to scan as possible. Here are some easy ways to improve your visibility:

Boost Your Motorcycle’s Lights

Upgrade to LED lighting for a more powerful beam. This will help you see as much of the road ahead of you as possible and as clearly as possible.

Maintain Your Motorcycle’s Windshield

If you have a motorcycle windshield, ensure that it’s installed at the proper height. Otherwise, it could impede your vision when you go through mud or water. Be sure to clean it frequently, as well.

Get the Right Gear

Buy helmet shields or goggles with anti-fogging capabilities. This will help ensure you maintain good visibility despite the weather conditions.

Increase Your Visibility to Others

When you ride a motorcycle, you’re surrounded by vehicles that are much larger than you. Inside these vehicles are drivers who may be distracted.

It’s important to do your part to stay visible at all times so the chances of being hit decrease, such as:

  • Wearing brightly colored clothing, especially at night, so that you’ll be hard to miss on the road.
  • Adding reflective tape to your clothing or helmet.
  • Riding in a group. When you’re in a pack, you’re more visible.

The more you can make yourself visible to other motorists, the better!
